Beacon: A Hierarchical Network Topology Monitoring System Based on IP Multicast

چکیده

This paper presents Beacon, a technique that exploits the advantages of IP multicast to provide a low overhead system for network topology monitoring. Beacon is a self-organizing system which builds a self similar network topology that enables the system to converge very quickly even at a high degree of scalability. Another property of the Beacon system is that it does not require any interdomain routing protocol for IP multicast, making its deployment possible even in subnetworks which are interconnected by domains which do not support IP multicast routing or that deploy different routing protocols. One desirable side effect of the deployment of beacon is that it acts as a self configuring IP multicast tunneling facility which provides a distributed system with fault tolerant IP multicast reacheability. A comparison of Beacon with several other routing and gateway protocols is discussed.

Supporting the Need for Inter-Domain Multicast Reachability

Internet multicast is transitioning from the flat, virtual topology known as the Multicast Backbone (MBone) to a hierarchical, globally deployed service. This transition introduces a number of important management issues. In particular, it is believed that the success of multicast on a large scale partly depends on the availability of good management tools. In this paper, we address the specifi...

Statistical Characteristics of Multicast Traffic on a National Backbone Network

IP multicast catches Chinese researchers’ eyes recently as the deployment of non-tunnel multicast routing protocols throughout the CERNET mature. But characteristics of multicast traffic still need to be understood. Using our developed passive monitoring system, we observe multicast traffic on links connecting peer networks to our native multicast backbone network. First of all, we analyze of c...

A Dynamic Group Management Framework for Large-scale Distributed Event Monitoring

Distributed event monitoring is an important service for fault, performance and security management. Next generation event monitoring services are higly distributed and invovling a large number of monitoring agents. In order to support scalabel event monitoring, the monitoring agents use IP multicasting as a group communication for exchanging events and control information. However, dueto the d...

Sago: A Network Resource Management System for Real-Time Content Distribution

Content replication and distribution is an effective technology to reduce the response time for web accesses and has been proven quite popular among large Internet content providers. However, existing content distribution systems assume a store-and-forward delivery model and is mostly based on static content. This paper describes the design, implementation, and initial evaluation of a network r...

A Framework for Hierarchical Multicast Routing

We propose a framework for the creation and maintenance of multicast trees in hierarchical networks. This framework aims at coping with an inherent diiculty of topology aggregating in such networks. The main idea of the proposed framework is to distribute the tree topology information among a set of hierarchical Multicast Group Servers (MGSs) nominated for each multicast tree, while keeping reg...
